Position: This is a full-time
Location: Washington, DC preferred, but can accommodate a remote

Compensation: $100 – $120K depending on experience; monthly health & wellness stipend and a flexible leave policy

Position Summary


The Development Director (DD) will design, lead and implement a sustainable fundraising strategy to increase NUF’s philanthropic revenue from a diverse portfolio of sources ($2.5M+ budget). The DD will achieve this goal by developing fundraising strategies in partnership with the President & CEO that include new, innovative approaches to create a strong support base for NUF. As a member of Senior Staff, the DD reports to the President & CEO and will provide leadership on overall organizational strategy, in coordination with other staff. Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop, manage, and deliver a fundraising strategy, including short- and long-term measurable goals that will meet the fundraising goals to lead to consistent growth in revenue to meet operation and program needs
  • Manage and grow a portfolio of major individual and institutional funders

  • Oversee the development, testing and implementation of new fundraising or fee-for service initiatives

  • Partner with the President & CEO, the Board of Directors, and Alumni Advisory Board to design and support fundraising activities
  • Oversee the vision, planning and execution of fundraising events or campaigns, including the annual Homecoming Conference Dinner; Race to Give Campaign,
  • Develop and implement special events to recognize and cultivate prospects and existing donors
  • Design and oversee class giving strategies and volunteer fundraising structures for alumni

  • Oversee the creation of an annual revenue pipeline

Board Engagement and Reporting

  • In collaboration with the President & CEO, present Development updates to the Board of Directors and manage related board communications
  • Support the Development Committee as well as report on revenue goals to the Finance Committee
  • Draft Development-related budgets as well as provide periodic updates to ensure sound fiscal management

Operational Effectiveness/Project Management

  • Design and oversee development systems and structures that provide both support and accountability, as well as ensure appropriate balance between standardization and flexibility across all fundraising activities
  • Lead the customization of the new CRM

  • Develop and implement organizational processes and protocols for donor prospecting, cultivation, and stewardship

  • Manage fundraising events and campaigns


  • Additional related responsibilities as determined by the President & CEO Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and 10+ years of experience; Master’s Degree in a related field preferred
  • Proven track record of creating and executing effective fundraising strategies for diverse revenue streams
  • Able to drive innovation, change and growth

  • Proven track record of soliciting and closing major gifts from individuals, companies and foundations

  • Superb relationship management and interpersonal skills, including the ability to inspire and hold accountable diverse internal and external stakeholders (including funders, peers, direct manger, reports, board members)
  • Comfortable balancing multiple priorities and deliverables effectively

  • Superior management, administrative and communication skills (written and oral)

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Strong analytical skills

  • High level of energy and commitment to outcomes-driven performance

  • Strong understanding of technology and information systems pertinent to the role (Customer Relation Management platform, Content Management Systems, and Donation Management Platforms expertise a plus)
  • Can roll up their sleeves and hit the ground running
