Michael Mero

Michael A. Mero has used his initiative to tailor his post-secondary education and work to foster learning and critical thinking skills. Many of his life choices were marked by becoming a leader in his field and developing individualized plans to foster his growth. In undergrad, Mero developed his own Areas of Concentration in the CUNY Baccalaureate Program and worked hard to graduate as Magna Cum Laude. The programs he developed allowed him to learn about social issues in New York/US and begin research on grassroots movements and community building. During this time, he worked at Hunter College and supported a team which promoted education through technology.

After university, Mero was shortlisted for the JET Programme. He was flown to Itakura Town in Gunma, Japan to serve as an assistant language teacher of English and cultural ambassador. During his tenure, he fostered dialogue regarding social issues in the United States and Japan, managed classrooms of all ages, and worked toward gathering usable resources for LGBTQ+ foreigners in Japan. Strengthening access to services became part of his regular extracurricular work. In his time doing this, Mero has helped a number of organizations such as the Itakura Town International Association, Tatebayashi City International Association, and Stonewall AJET.

Following this, Mero re-entered the educational support field as a Customer Success Associate at IO Education. During this time he troubleshot issues faced by teachers and administrators, trained them in academic software, and volunteered several times at Make the Road NYC.

During his time in the NUF program, Mero was a full-time student in the CUNY Baruch College Marxe School of Public and International Affairs. and was the appointed fellow to the Executives’ Alliance for Boys and Men of Color. At the EA, he oversaw logistics of the Collective Action Tables, assisted with meeting management, and further developed his skills within its philanthropic-nonprofit hybrid space. Mero is always up to a challenge and is willing to discuss his life experiences in hope that it helps inform and elevate others.

Michael A. Mero has his Bachelor’s degree from the City University of New York and his Master’s of Public Administration from CUNY Baruch College.
