National Urban Fellows (NUF) develops accomplished and courageous professionals of all ethnic and racial backgrounds, particularly people of color and women, to be leaders and change agents in the public and nonprofits sectors, with a strong commitment to social justice and equity. NUF’s Academic and Leadership Program is a rigorous, 14-month, full-time graduate program for mid-career professionals. The fellowship comprises four semesters of academic coursework and nine-month Mentorship, which culminates in a Master in Policy Management (MPM) degree from Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy. Position Summary
 

NUF is seeking a seasoned leader to serve as our Program Director, responsible for managing and overseeing our flagship fellowship program, carrying out, and enhancing all aspects of the Fellow & Mentor experience in accordance with our racial equity leadership development model. Under supervision of the President & CEO and in coordination with other staff, key responsibilities include: 

  • Program Management. Provide day-to-day oversight of Fellows program, serving as the primary point of contact for Fellows and Mentors 
    • Manage residencies and Fellow-Mentor relationships; provide direction and guidance on work plan development, progress reporting, feedback and performance evaluation processes 
    • Oversee Fellow & Mentor matching and onboarding processes, orientation activities, training sessions 
    • Provide individual coaching sessions to support Fellows leadership development goals towards program completion  
    • Plan and facilitate Fellow leadership development workshops and activities  
    • Manage ongoing communications with Fellows, Mentors, and related parties 
    • Administer evaluation tools to monitor program quality and assess outcomes and impact; recommend and implement data-driven refinements  
    • Advance and revise program policies and procedures as needed, ensuring participant satisfaction and accountability for upholding requirements  
    • Maintain consistent updates to and organization of Fellowship digital files and records  
  • Partner & Stakeholder Engagement. Manage stakeholder relationships with Georgetown and McCourt School of Public Policy representatives, Mentorship host organizations, and other key partners; collaborate with Alumni Advisory Board on Alumni-Fellow initiatives 
  • Recruitment & Selection. Support ongoing Mentor & Fellow recruitment efforts, serving as spokesperson and representing NUF at recruitment activities and events; oversee applicant screening and selection process 
  • Special events. Lead planning and coordination of annual Fellow retreat in January and NUF completion graduation ceremony in July  
  • Materials Development. Create, revise and update program materials including participant handbooks, policies, and forms    
  • Resource Development. Research and identify resources to support Fellow needs (eg, relocation, health & well-being, financial management, skills development, etc.) 

Qualifications 

  • Advanced degree in public administration or policy, nonprofit management, education, or a related discipline strongly preferred 
  • Proven experience in designing, implementing, and managing fellowship or leadership development programs  
  • Proven experience in coaching high-performing adult learners, providing individualized guidance to support their professional and leadership journeys  
  • Adept at conveying and integrating racial equity analysis and concepts into leadership development programming and coaching  
  • Demonstrated comfort with facilitating inclusive discussions and learning spaces with people of different backgrounds, lived experiences and across generations 
  • Experience leading, managing or supervising others and fostering a positive work environment  
  • Ability to build, grow, and sustain productive relationships with diverse stakeholders as a representative of the program and organization   
  • Exceptional organizational skills: Ability to manage multiple timelines and keep self and others organized via impeccable record-keeping and future forecasting   
  • Can effectively communicate with varied audiences via written and verbal channels
